The Impact of Educational
Deprivation on Children in Lebanon
Education Challenges in Lebanon
The educational landscape in Lebanon has been further destabilized by consecutive strikes over the past three years, coupled with the economic challenges and the unprecedented disruptions of the COVID-19 pandemic, which caused exacerbated educational inequalities. In addition, the difficult socio-economic conditions faced by families have resulted in a diminished access to education, while public educational schools grapple with overwhelming demand, private alternatives remain financially unaffordable to a vast majority leading to increased school dropout rates due to negative coping mechanisms such as child labour. To tackle the pressing educational needs of all children in Lebanon, collaborative efforts must be coordinated among governmental institutions, local and international organizations, educational institutions and other stakeholders.
“Among Syrian students in Lebanon aged between 6 and 17, only 59% of girls and 51% of boys are attending school”
Our Education journey
HAND is dedicated to expanding learning opportunities for children that have been deprived of their right to education. Our programs offer tailored solutions for students that dropped out of school, or lack the necessary certifications to complete their higher education and pursue university studies.
We place a significant focus on inclusivity, particularly of girls, residing in camps and at a higher risk of early marriage. We also prioritize students that have experienced psychological issues as a result of war, and strive to create them a supportive environment within the community and school settings.
Moreover, we provide life skills courses and psychosocial support, to empower these children, and boost their self-confidence. We also collaborate closely with parents and community partners to raise awareness about the importance of education.
Through our collective endeavors, we aim to ensure that every child has access to quality education, and the necessary support to thrive academically, psychologically, emotionally, and socially.
We provide our services through 6 educational centers in Lebanon through multiple educational programs. Students receiving formal education receive a certificate of recognition from the Lebanese Ministry of Education. This certification holds significant value, particularly for many Syrian displaced children in Lebanon, as it opens doors to future academic opportunities.

Digital Schools (2022-2024)
Digital Learning: Our Next Chapter
In partnership with The Digital School, one of Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum’s Global Initiatives (MBRGI), “The Digital School” project provides 30,000 new learning opportunities over a span of three years to Syrian refugee and Lebanese children in Lebanon that have been deprived of education. Our approach extends beyond traditional classroom learning, as we prioritize equipping students with essential digital self-learning skills.
Operating across 6 educational schools situated in various regions of Lebanon, our project ensures that
these vulnerable children have access to high-quality education.
Through the establishment of 15 digital learning spaces within the schools, students are trained to effectively engage with the Lebanese curriculum's digital content available on the Digital School platform. Each student gains round-the-clock access to this platform, facilitating remote learning from home. This content was developed by expert content creators who underwent training provided by Arizona State University (ASU) and reviewed by expert subject leaders and linguistic specialists.
Our project places a strong emphasis on addressing educational gaps among students. We offer a diverse range of educational programs tailored to meet their specific needs in education, and prepare them to join the formal education streamline.
Moreover, our commitment extends to supporting and motivating students throughout their educational journey. We provide the essential learning resources and supplies such as books, stationery, books, transportation facilities and other necessary materials to ensure that students have all the tools that facilitate their learning process and success.
In addition, all registered students receive a certificate of recognition from the Lebanese Ministry of Education upon the completion of each academic year, in recognition of their achievements. This certification serves as a gateway for students to pursue further education at the secondary and tertiary levels.
Through the Digital Schools project, we are dedicated to empowering these children with education, skills, and resources that will positively impact their lives and enable them to build a better future.

Compensatory Education Program
Compensatory Education Program
A bridge to formal education
In our Compensatory Program, we provide additional educational support to children who have experienced discontinuity or gaps in their learning journey. Through a placement test at the beginning of each program, we identify the specific needs of each student. Our goal is to tailor educational interventions to address these needs and ensure that the desired outcomes are achieved by the end of the academic year.

The Learning Support Program
The Learning Support Program provides targeted assistance to Formal Education students who require additional support in specific subjects. This program is typically offered during summer or after regular school hours. Its purpose is to address the individual needs of students and help them excel in their studies. The program focuses on providing tailored support and guidance to ensure students receive the necessary assistance in their academic journey.
The BLN program focuses on teaching children foundational skills in English and Arabic languages reading and writing, in addition to numeracy and life skills. The aim is to develop their abilities in these areas so that they can successfully progress to formal education. This program consists of three levels. Upon successful completion, students will transition to the ALP program.
Our Accelerated Learning program is designed to support out-of-school children or who are in school but need extra educational support. We offer an accelerated educational curriculum that covers the four core subjects: Mathematics, Sciences, Arabic, and English. The program aims to address their educational gaps and bridge them to the formal education stream.

Enhancing Education through the
Digital Learning
Online & Self-learning
HAND has created digital content for the Lebanese educational curriculum major subjects (Mathematics,
Arabic, English, Physics, Chemistry, and Science) covering grades 1 till 12. This content is provided
through the ‘Digital School’ platform, and is regularly developed and updated. Each lesson includes the
lesson plan, explanatory notes, video demonstrations, discussions, and tests.
We have equipped all classrooms with projectors to integrate this technology into education and enable
teachers to use the Digital School platform to deliver the lecture in class.
Students are also asked to review their lessons through the Digital School Platform in the Digital Learning
Spaces provided at the schools, during dedicated times. Each lesson includes a list of evaluative questions
at the end that students are required to answer, as a means of assessment and evaluation of students’
knowledge by the end of each lesson.
Teachers provide guidance to students within the Digital Learning Spaces, and help enhance their skills
in using electronic devices for self-learning. In addition, all our teachers undergo professional training to
enhance their digital teaching skills and Capacity Building and receive a certification as Digital Teachers
from the University of Arizona.
Being a digital content simplifies the study material and makes it more appealing and amusing to
children, which increases their motivation to learn.
